Four Maps – "Palestine Exploration Fund" – London, 1878-1879
Palestine Exploration Fund map, from surveys conducted for the committee of the Palestine Exploration Fund by C. R. Conder and H.H. Kitchener, Stanford's Geographical Establishment. Four maps of Palestine (out of the Palestine Exploration Fund map in 26 sheets). London, 1878-1879. English and Arabic in English transcript.
Four maps of various regions in Palestine, by Claude Conder and Horatio Kitchener, who headed the expedition of the Palestine Exploration Fund: * Sheet V. The Carmel, Haifa Bay and Western Galilee. * Sheet VII. Northern Dead Sea. * Sheet XVI. Southern Coastal Plain. * Sheet XIII. Middle Coastal Plain.
The expedition of the Palestine Exploration Fund was active during the years 1871-1878 aiming at locating and recording all of the locations mentioned in the Bible, in the Apocrypha and in the literature of the Sages. At first the expedition was led by Captain R.E. Stewart and when he fell sick with Malaria, he was replaced by Claude Conder. When Conder was injured during the attack on Safed, he was replaced by Horatio Kitchener as head of the expedition. When the work was completed, the "Map of the Palestine Exploration Fund" was published – a topographic map consisting of 26 sheets. The map was printed in several editions and is considered an important source of information about Palestine during the 1870s.
