Research of the Holy Land with a Dozen Maps - Christiaan van Adrichom - Cologne, 1613
Theatrum Terrae Sanctae et Biblicarum Historiarum cum tabulis geographicis aere expressis, Christiaan van Adrichom, Cologne, 1613. Latin. Fourth edition.
Christiaan van Adrichom (1533-1585) - a catholic priest, native of Delft (Holland), composed several essays about Eretz Israel. This book brings a comprehensive description of the Holy Land, with a dozen folded maps - hand-painted etchings: two large maps, one of Eretz Israel and the other of Jerusalem as well as ten maps of Israel's Tribes, with illustrations of significant biblical sites. At the end of the book: a passage focusing on sites in Jerusalem during the period of Jesus and a chronologic description of biblical events starting with the creation of Adam. The book was published in six editions, the first one in 1590, and was translated into several languages. [12], 286, [30] pp, 12 folded maps, 33.5 cm. Fair-good condition. Moth-damages and tears, professionally restored. Moth-holes to some of the maps. Tears to some of the maps. Several maps are paper-backed, for conservation. Elaborate leather binding, new (attached are remnants of the original binding). Damages are professionally restored. Book is in a fine box.
