Ba'al Nefesh. Berlin, 1762. Signature of Rabbi Ya'akov Shemesh, one of the Chatam Sofer's Rabbis
Ba'al Nefesh - halachahs of niddah by the Ra'avad. With halachahs and novellae on tractate Niddah by the Ramba"n and more. Pedigree copy.
The gaon Rabbi Ya'akov Shemesh's handwritten signature appears on leaf 33: "לה' הארץ ומלואה נאם הק' יעקב שמש."
Rabbi Ya'akov ben Rabbi Teveli Shemesh [d. 1785] was Av Beit Din of Frankfurt, and rabbi of the kloiz and rosh yeshivah there before Rabbi Pinchas HaLevi Horowitz, author of Hafla'ah. He was one of the first rabbis of the author of Chatam Sofer, who called him "my teacher and rabbi" ["מורי ורבי"]. He was the fourth signatory on the letter from Frankfurt rabbis about the "Cleves get." He was offered the position of rabbi of Würzburg in approximately 1775, but he rejected the offer and stayed in Frankfurt am Main until he passed away in 1785. Frankfurt community books record regarding him: "למד ולימד תני ומתני... תלמוד בבלי וירושלמי ספרא וספרי וכולא תלמודא" ["studied and taught ... Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds, Sifra and Sifri and all ..."].
