Noam Elimelech. Early edition. C. 1820. Signature of the Chatam Sofer's Disciple, Rabbi Hillel Pollack

Early edition of Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk's book, with neither place nor year of print. [Poland-Russia c. 1820].

The book was printed with neither place nor year of print, likely due to threat of censorship, which especially haunted Chassidic books. In addition, the author's name is not recorded on the title page, although it does imply that the author is Rabbi Yechiel Michel of Zlotchov: The title page states that it includes wills from the rabbi, the chassid the author Rabbi Yechiel Michel [of Zlotchov] - with the word 'the author' in bold. 'Hanhagot HaAdam' by the rabbi, the maggid, the well-known G-dly person, Moreinu Rabbi Yechiel Michel ztz"l is on the back of the title page. However, the real author is Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk. Apparently, this edition of Noam Elimelech is the first printed with 'Hanhagot HaAdam,' and the name of the author was indeed corrected in later editions.

Owner's stamp on the title page: "The youth Hillel Pollack of Anish Pietra." Rabbi Hillel Pollack was rabbi of Sasregen, a primary disciple of the Chatam Sofer, who was called "Kodesh Hillulim" by his rabbi. He was born in 1810 and orphaned at a young age. He moved to Pressburg where he studied under the Chatam Sofer. He married Rabbi Ya'akov Ber HaLevi Feldman's daughter, from Monospetri, near Margareten, were he lived. He was appointed rabbi of the Bodosh community in Transylvania after his father-in-law passed away, and served there several years. C. 1866 he was selected as rabbi of the Jewish community of Sasregen, which was founded at the same time. He served there 27 years, until his passing in 1893. Refer to: HaChatam Sofer U'Talmidav, 124-126. Few of his writings were printed under the name Kodesh Hillulim (as he was known by his rabbi, the Chatam Sofer).

Stefansky, Chassidut 380. Additional owners' stamps.
