70, 47 pages, 21cm. with stamp of the censor and a number of ownership signatures including 'David H"k Tevele ben Hertz K[atzenellenboge]n'.
HaRav David Tevele Katzenellenbogen (1848-1931) was born in Tauragė, Kaunas, He was known as a teacher and very diligent, he acquired Torah in the Bet Medresh of Vilna, and from his youth he was known as a prodigy. He authored very known commentary on Talmud Yurashalmi, and was accepted to Rabbanut when he was twenty years old.
He served as Rav in many communities (1894-1907) amongst: Podlaskie Voivodeship,Suwałki (northeastern Poland). He was appointed as Rav in Peterburg in the month of Nison 1908. He was one of the Chief Rabbanim of Russia, was nominated as a head of the meeting of Rabbanim in Vilna, he represented the Jews against the Russian Government and was active for his Jewish brothers in the general Russia and specifically Petersburg. He was among the founders of the religious party "Netzach Yisrael" who worked for the commitment of the Jewish nation. After the revolution by the government he was persecuted for his refusal to sign that there are no religious persecution in Russia. He authored the sefarim "Bar Mitzva" (1914), "Ma'ayan Mei Niftoach" on Tractate Yevamot (1923), and lectures "Divrei David" (1928). Established schools and Batei Medresh by worrying for the Jewish education in Russia. During WWI he set up the "Jewish Committee to help Victims of War". He helped the refugees and deportees, prisoners, and Jewish soldiers. On the 11th day of Teves 1931 when he was 84 years he passed away and laid to rest in the cemetery in St. Petersburg [Leningrad].
