Rambam Venice 1550. Magnificent Volume!
This edition of the RaMBaM was one of two rival editions published the same year. Bragadin, an Italian nobleman, had opened a printing press which ended Giustiniani’s brief monopoly following the closure of Bomberg’s press. Although the dispute was between non-Jews, because the Ma’HaRaM had given his glosses on the RaMBaM for printing to Bragadin, the issue was referred to the Rema (see Rema responsa #10). Ultimately this business dispute ended with each side denouncing the other to the Church for printing defamatory seforim. This led to an official enquiry, eventually culminating in the tragic burning of the Talmud and Codes in 1553.
For details of this tragedy see Amram, The Makers of Hebrew Books in Italy, pp.255- 64
