R. Naftoli Tzvi Yehuda Berlin (1816–1893), was one of the greatest rabbinical figures of his era, Rosh Yeshiva of Volozhin and author of many important works. His first wife was the daughter of R. Yitzchok of Volozhin, the son of R. Chaim of Volozhin. His second wife was his niece, a daughter of his brother in law, R. Yechiel Michel Epstein, the author of the Oruch Ha’Shulchon. A son from his first marriage, R. Chaim Berlin, became the Rav of Moscow and his daughter married R. Refoel Shapiro later Rosh Yeshiva in Volozhin. R. Meir Berlin (later Bar-Ilan) was his son from his second marriage.
