Renee Miranda Thomas, a Parisian lawyer who joined the French underground during the Second World War, was caught by the Germans and interned in the Mauthausen camp for two years, 1943-1945, describing the difficult period in the camp. A first-hand testimony of the publication immediately after its liberation.


The cover design in which an SS policeman is seen against the background of the author's hand bound and barbed wire , by José Cabrero Arnal [1909-1982], a Spanish cartoonist, member of the Republican militia who became a French citizen in 1939, was captured by the Germans and deported to the Mauthausen camp, like many Republicans and the fate of the author of the book.
