1900s evangelical Holyland/Palestine color picture postcard Bread Vendor J'lem
Turn of the 20th Century evangelical Holyland color picture postcard of bread vendors in Jerusalem (Palestine): full front image with blue English caption in CAPs + series number " E_ 15137. A Bread Shop in Jerusalem" (of the Celesque Series, 'B' edition, here published " For the London Society for Promoting Christianity Amongst the Jews"); on back bisected pre-printed postal stationary template "Post Card" in English ("All British Production") with short instructions, by The Photochrom Co. Ltd. of London & Tunbridge Wells + their double-ringed initialled logo at top center, with printed instruction for postage rates in box at top right; unused: generally clear mostly white back, very light wear to the four corners. The London Society mentioned on the postcard was also known as the "London Jews' Society" and is now known as the Church's Ministry Among Jewish People (CMJ), founded in 1809 and promoted by key Christian figures such as William Wilberforce and Charles Simeon; the CMJ is one of the ten official mission agencies of the Church of England although in 1992 George Carey became the first Archbishop of Canterbury to decline to be the Patron of CMJ earning praise from the Jewish community of the UK.
