Russian realist writer, critic, author of critical satirical works, known under the pseudonym Nikolai Shchedrin (real name of the writer-Saltykov), one of the brightest writers of his time. He spent the autumn and winter of 1875 in Nice. His impressions of the Cote d’azur he described in his letter to P. V. Annenkov: ‘I do not find anything special in
Nice; the city is unclean, there is no place to walk, and the notorious Promenade des Anglais seemed to me a pity. The surroundings are really charming, judging by what I saw yesterday when I went to Villefranche. Since I intend to stay here for 5 months, I will probably go around everywere. Soon I will go to Monte Carlo to see the cultural Russian people.’
