Segulah Manuscript. Kabbalistic Elucidations on Midrash Rabbah, Handwritten by the Admo"r Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac of Zhidichov
Leaf from a printed Midrash Rabbah, a large leaf with especially wide margins in which the Admo"r wrote his composition on the midrash - Peirush Mahari"a. The Admo"r wrote his commentary of approximately 1800 words on both sides of the leaf, entirely in his hand. The commentary was later printed as a book from this manuscript. This work on the midrash was especially important to the author, and in his will he requested that this book be printed first of all his books.
His renowned disciple, the Admo"r the "Imrei Yosef" of Spinka, who dealt with preparing and printing his teacher's books, referred to himself as "the youngest and smallest of the author's disciples." He wrote:
Once, the Admo"r zlh"h placed my kvittel in the manuscript of his book, and said, "From this everyone can obtain salvation in matters of children, health, and sustenance" (introduction to the book Likkutei Torah V'HaSha"s, Part IV).
The Admo"r Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Eichenstein of Zhidichov [1805-1873] was one of the leading Admo"rs and kabbalists of his generation. He was a paternal nephew and disciple of the Admo"r Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Eichenstein, the "Ateret Tzvi" of Zhidichov, and of the Admo"r Rabbi Moshe Eichenstein of Sambor. He was recognized for his holy conduct from childhood, and from the age of 14, no midnight passed by without his Torah study. His illustrious uncle, Rabbi Tzvi of Zhidichov, said about him that a soul as holy as his has not been in the world for hundreds of years. In his childhood, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Rimanov already said of him, "He will illuminate the world." In his youth, he knew all the tzaddikim of his generation: Rabbi Naftali of Ropshitz, Rabbi Meir of Premishlan, Rabbi Shalom of Belz, and more. He also traveled the distance to Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin, and even as far as Mezhibuzh to meet the elder tzaddik from the previous generation, Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heschel - the rabbi of Apta. When he sought to serve as rabbi of a small town, his teachers Rabbi Shalom of Belz and Rabbi Meir of Premishlan refused to grant him rabbinic ordination, because their opinion was that he should serve as an Admo"r leading thousands of Chassidim. Indeed, he did become an Admo"r to thousands of Chassidim, and Chassidim and Admo"rim even traveled to him in Zhidichov. Non-Chassidic Torah leaders also accepted his Torah authority, including Rabbi Mordechai Ze'ev Ittinga, Rabbi Yosef Shaul Nathansohn and others.
He would often cite the Zohar and kabbalistic works along with thoughts of his teacher-uncle. He spoke with such enthusiasm that his listeners felt "the sanctity could be grasped with both hands." His kabbalistic elucidations were written in sanctity and purity while he was clad in tallit and tefillin.
Stamp: "The youth Moshe Eichenstein of Zhidichov." Grandson of the author, son of Rabbi Yissachar Dov Berish of Dolina. He served as Admo"r of Zhidichov and then in Vortzki, and finally in Munkacs. He was killed in the Holocaust.
[1] leaf paper. 25x39 cm. The Admo"r's handwriting covers all of the wide white margins of the leaf on both sides. Approximately 1800 words.
Fine condition. Minimal stains. Small perforation due to the ink's acidity. New leather binding.
