Yehoszua "Sam" Herciger was born in 1917 in Zawiercie, Poland, After the outbreak of World War II, Herciger tried to escape to Spain but was arrested in France and was interned in the Gurs camp. He returned to Belgium and married a Jewish woman named Henni. One year later, they both fled to France went into hiding, but were caught and sent to Auschwitz, where Henni perished in the women's camp. In January 1945, he and the other inmates were sent on a death march, which he barely survived. After the liberation, he returned to Belgium and married a Holocaust survivor, who fell ill shortly after the wedding and committed suicide. During an exhibition in Antwerp, he met Edith Beck, a painter who was 13 years his younger. They married and had two children.
