Original photograpic poster to promote the Christie's auction of Diana's dresses. There were a number organized and printed by one of the charities that Diana supported. This photographic poster measures 16 inches x 22 inches. It has slight creases on the corners but otherwise in good condition for age and the collection of posters were stored rolled up. This is a very high quality double weight photographic poster.
On June 25th, 1997, 79 of Diana's gowns went up for auction at Christie's in New York City. It was one of the biggest events of the year, was talked about by many around the world and featured in nearly every magazine and newspaper.
It was Prince William's idea, the eldest son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. It was a fabulous idea to raise funds for many of Diana's charities.
The Princess worked with Meredith Etherington-Smith, a Christie's expert who catalogued the dresses and took notes on each outfit.
A close friend and author, Jeffrey Archer recalls: "Once, at an auction when we raised $160,000, she, Diana said, 'I'd sign this tablecloth and we'd get another $16,000' So I called out: 'Ladies and gentlemen, Her Royal Highness has agreed to sign this cloth.' We got $17,600 for it. She was good at knowing the role she could play." Princess Diana signed many items for people as it brought them comfort and made them feel special.
This collection of photographic posters was used to promote the auction of the dresses by a number of charities Diana supported. One of the charties gathered the posters and asked her to sign them on her visit, after the sale of her gowns. She was very excited about how many outfits sold and she mentioned that she was shocked at how much they sold for and that more funds would be collected and given to her charities by signing these posters. She was in a hurry as she wanted to share the good news with all her charities she supported. One collector who was a supporter of Diana's work donated for the entire collection of posters. The rest of the photographic posters will be offered over time.
