Armenian Pottery Vase in the Shape of a Bottle – Jerusalem, Jordan
Armenian ceramic vase, decorated with gazelles and a vegetal pattern on a gray background. Painted and glazed clay. Marked at the bottom: “Jerusalem Jordan”, alongside the mark of the joint workshop Balian – Karakashian. Circa 1950s.
The Armenian pottery workshop in Jerusalem was founded in 1919, at the end of WWI, when the British invited the master potter David Ohannessian to help with the restoration of the tiles of the Dome of the rock mosque in Jerusalem. The workshop was later split, with the formation of the joint workshop Balian – Karakshian, that operated from the 1920s to the 1960s.
Height: approximately 19 cm. Good condition, chips, wear.
