Long novella handwritten by R. Elazar Moshe Horowitz of Pinsk, (unsigned) on the topic of Birchas Ha’Mazon and the shiur of “k’dei achilas p’ras”. With mention of his brother R. Yehoshua Horowitz of Shklov.
R. Elazar (Lazer) Moshe Horowitz (1817-1890), was born in Tzrikov, a suburb of Mohilov, and initially learned under R. Aryeh Leib Shapiro of Kovno, before going on to learn independently. In 1860, he was chosen to serve as Rov of the great city of Pinsk, based on the recommendation of the previous Rav, R. Mordechai Zakheim. One of the greatest Talmidei Chachomim of his era, he was held in great awe by both his rabbinical contemporaries as well as the masses. He is well known for his glosses which were published at the back of the Vilna edition of the Talmud, as well as the sefer Ohel Moshe.
R. Chaim Brisker once commented that the “Gedolim” of the previous generation included R. Yisroel Salanter, the Beis HaLevi, the MaHaRIL Diskin, and he added that one can also include R. Elazar Moshe Horowitz.
