Beautiful Chinese silk wall-hanging panels. One panel depicts four Daoist immortals with characteristic attributes against a stylized landscape. In the Daoist system, they are revered as guardians of the hearth. On the other panel, in a mirror composition, two vases are depicted surrounded by pairs of emperors dragons and phoenixes. The bottom panel is decorated with silk tassels. Provenance: Collection of Edward Hyers Clayton (1886-1946). American writer and missioner. E.H. Clayton and his wife were missionaries of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society in charge of Wayland Academy, a missionary school in Hangzhou, China from 1912 to 1942. E.H. Clayton wrote a book Heaven Below based on his living experience in China.
