St. John Baptist Caravaggesque painter, 17th century
Caravaggesque painter, 17th century
Technique: oil painting on canvas
Dimensions: 65 x 55 cm
San Giovanni Battista was a frequent subject in the painting of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, great master of seventeenth-century naturalism, and in the works of his followers. We know of eight paintings, present in the various collections of museums around the world. Our canvas depicts a young John the Baptist on a monochrome and dark background, with his right hand resting on his chest and his left hand holding a cross of sticks with a cloth bearing the inscription 'Ecce Agnus Dei'. The impeccable pictorial quality, the details of the complexion of the subject, of the hands, identify a high-level Caravaggesque painter.
State of conservation: excellent, observation with ultraviolet rays reveals distributed everywhere light retouches, relined, in non-contemporary frame
Dimensions: 65 x 55 cm
