Two Letters to Chief Rabbi Herzog – the "Af Al Pi" Immigration (Aliyah Bet), 1938-1939
Two letters that were sent to the Chief Rabbi of Palestine, Yitzchak Isaac Halevi Herzog, about illegal immigration to Palestine. 1938-1939.
1. A typewritten letter, signed by Moshe Shertok (Sharet), July 1938. "There is an explicit commitment to continue giving licenses to illegal [immigrants]… may he write to the chief secretary… emphasize the people's suffering and note that as he has heard the Agency is asking for 100 licenses yet they are not given to it" (Hebrew).
[1] leaf, 26 cm. Good condition. Filing holes, several of them torn. Fold lines and creases. A few minor stains.
2. Handwritten letter, signed by three members of the Revisionist Movement (including Shmuel Tagansky), who were imprisoned in the "detention camp for Jews" in Tzrifin, presumably, after being arrested for bringing immigrants to Palestine, July 1939.
"We are honored to send his honor our apologies for the anguish we have caused his honor and express our gratitude… we are sure that the honorable Chief Rabbi will carry out the promises we relied on when we stooped our hunger strike" (Hebrew).
