A Rare Semichah Document Written by The Netziv, Volozhin 1892 - The Final Year of The Volozhin Yeshiva.

Presented here is a rare Semicha document written by R. Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin, Rosh Yeshiva and Rav of Volozhin. Written on behalf of “Yehoshua b. Shlomo Zvi HaKohen” of Volozhin.

This Semicha is historically important as it was written in 1892, the final year in which the Netziv served as Rosh Yeshiva of Volozhin. According to the date written here, 26 Nissan 1892, the Yeshiva had already been forcibly closed by the Russian government. The Yeshiva doors were sealed shut, and the Netziv's personal stamp - "Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin Rosh Yeshiva of Volozhin", was seized as well by the authorities (as it testified to the fact that he headed the Yeshiva, which "violated" Russian government policy). Hence no stamp is seen on this document, unlike many which do bear his stamp.

Although the Yeshiva was closed, the Netziv himself was given a short "grace period" before he was exiled from Volozhin. This is perhaps the very last document issued by the Netziv while still in Volozhin, written during that short period of time between the Yeshiva's closure and while still residing in Volozhin. The Netziv ultimately settled in Warsaw where he is buried.

In very good condition. Folded, with marks. 17.5cm

10 handwritten lines, with autograph. Dated 26 Nissan, 1892.
