LETTERS FROM THE FAMOUS WRITER AND SCHOLAR RABBI NECHEMIA SHMUEL LEIBOWITZ, TO R. YAAKOV GORDON OF ENGLAND.

Three letters from the famous American writer and scholar Rabbi Nechemia Shmuel Leibowitz, to the scholar R. Yaakov Gordon of England.

Letter 1: Discussing the location of the graves of the Avos in the Mearas Hamachpela.

Letter 2: Refers to his publications, including one with the original title: Hamaves Bepanim Sochakos’ [Death with a smile] which was written and prepared for printing in only 10 days.

Letter 3: Written in reply to R. Gordon’s enquiry as to the truth of the belief that everyone in America becomes rich. ‘As to your enquiry about our country; everything depends on the mazal of the place and the mazal of the time. Many people have become very wealthy over recent years. The place is the cause of it or the time is the cause. I think that the people of England are exceptionally clever, as they are expert fisherman catching fish in the American seas.

Rabbi Nechemia Shmuel Leibowitz (1862-1939), Born Kolno, Poland, settled in America and worked as a diamond dealer, while devoting much time to Jewish scholarship. Author of some 40 works (some of which were published in limited editions of only 100 copies), and edited many others.
