Participated in the painting “Meeting of the State Council” (1901–1903, State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg). Already during these years, Kustodiev’s virtuoso talent as a portrait painter became evident. During the First Russian Revolution of 1905–1907 he acted as a cartoonist in the magazines “Zhupel” and “Hellish Mail”. Since 1908 he worked in the field of sculptural portraits. He was a member of the “World of Art” and “Union of Russian Artists” associations. He lived in St. Petersburg and Moscow, often traveled to the cities and villages of the Upper Volga. He painted images of traditional life (series of “fairs”, “Maslenitsa”, “village holidays”) and colorful folk types (“merchantwomen”, “merchants”, beauties in the bathhouse - “Russian Venuses”). The first painting of this kind (Fair, 1906, Tretyakov Gallery) was painted by order of the Expedition of State Papers for an unrealized series of mass popular prints. After the revolution, he created his best works in the field of book illustration (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk district by N.S. Leskova; Rus' by E.I. Zamyatin; both works - 1923; etc.) and scenography (Flea Zamyatin in the 2nd Moscow Art Theater, 1925; etc.). The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and in many regional museums.
