Lebedev Vladimir Vasilievich (1891, St. Petersburg -1967, Leningrad). People's Artist of the RSFSR, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Arts. Schedule. One of the founders of Russian book illustration. Visited the workshop of F.A. Roubaud (1910–1914), as well as the School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture M.D. Bernstein and L.V. Sherwood. Studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1912–1914). Painted for the magazines “Satyricon” and “New Satyricon” (1911–1917). Was one of the organizers of the propaganda “Windows of GROWTH” in Leningrad (1920–1921). Professor at the Petrograd State Art Museum (1918-1921). Joined to the avant-garde “Unification of New Art Trends” (1922–1923), chaired by V.E. Tatlin; was greatly influenced by the latter. Later he was a member of the Four Arts Society. He created a special type of book illustration, combining the traditions of book graphics of the World of Art and the futurists. In the 1920s created the satirical series “NEP”, “New Life”, “Love of Scoundrels”. The result of everyday work with nature was a series of brilliant drawings “Acrobats”, “Ballerinas”, “Guitar Players” and numerous sketches of nude models. His drawings for “Little Elephant” by R. Kipling, works by S.Ya. Marshak's ”Yesterday and Today”, ”Ice Cream”, ”About a Stupid Mouse”, ”Circus” (all - 1925), ”Luggage” (1926), ”How a Plane Made a Plane” opened a new era in children's illustrated books. V.V. Lebedev headed the artistic editorial department of the department of children's and youth literature of the State Publishing House, turning it into a center for the creation of highly artistic books for children (1924-1933). The works of V.V. Lebedev's works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and other museums.
