Born in 1947 in Riga, in the family of an architect. In 1970 he graduated from the Moscow Higher Art and Industrial School (formerly Stroganov). One of the most significant representatives of the generation of ”outcasts of the 70s”; accepted into the Moscow Union of Artists only in 1988. The first personal exhibition (Kurchatov Palace of Culture, Moscow) took place in 1980 and was closed on the third day by the security services. Exhibition activities resumed in 1988 (“Pavel Filonov, Dmitry Grinevich, Sergei Potapov. Three nonconformist artists from Russia, ” Washington). In his works, Sergei Potapov develops a personal artistic style, “post-symbolism, ” based on the traditions of European symbolism and Russian cultural and historical heritage. Works are also in private collections in Russia, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Switzerland, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Great Britain, USA, Canada, Japan.
