Soviet and Russian sculptor, teacher, professor, chairman of the board of the St. Petersburg branch of the Union of Artists of the Russian Federation, member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts. Rector of the St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after. I. E. Repin (2001-2009). Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts (1999; corresponding member 1998). People's Artist of the Russian Federation (2005). Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR since 1972. From 1960 to 1966 he studied at the Faculty of Sculpture at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I.E. Repina. From 1966 to 1969 he studied in the creative workshops of Professor N.V. Tomsky and M.K. Anikushina. From 1987 to 1996 he was deputy chairman of the Leningrad organization of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR (since 1991 - the St. Petersburg Union of Artists). Charkin's works are widely known in our country and abroad; his creative range covers monumental sculpture, easel sculpture, small sculptures, and medals. The author's works are in museum and private collections in Russia and other countries.
