Russian artist, sculptor, art theorist. World War II participant; seriously wounded, he was demobilized in 1945. He studied at the Riga Academy of Arts (1946–1947) and the Moscow State Art Institute. V.I. Surikov (1947–1954), at the same time attended classes at the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow State University. He carried out large official orders: a monument in honor of the friendship of peoples - the so-called. Lotus Flower at the Aswan Dam in Egypt (1971); decorative reliefs for the Institute of Electronics in Zelenograd (1974) and the former building of the CPSU Central Committee in Ashgabat (now the House of the Government of Turkmenistan, 1975); tombstone of N.S. Khrushchev (1974). Worked in the field of book graphics: illustrated the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky ”Crime and Punishment”. Since 1956, he worked on the concept of a programmatic work for his work: the giant sculpture-environment “Tree of Life”. In 1976 he emigrated to the USA. Beginning in 1962, he gave theoretical articles and lectures, published blank poems figuratively commenting on his work. Since 1989, he often came to Russia, where his designs were used to build a memorial to the victims of the Gulag in Magadan (1996), as well as the composition “Renaissance” in Moscow (2000). In 1996, he received the State Prize. The artist's works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin Museum. A.S. Pushkin. The Tree of Life Museum, dedicated to the work of Ernst Neizvestny, has been opened in Uttersberg (Sweden).
