Hulot Ilmar Sooster (1924-1970) Estonian and Soviet graphic artist, one of the notable representatives of Moscow unofficial art of the 1950s and 1960s. He was born on Hiiumaa Island (Estonia). He studied at the Pallas Art School and the Tartu Art Institute. In 1949, he was arrested and spent several years in the Karlag camps; after his release in 1956, he moved to Moscow, where he joined the circle of underground artists. He worked in painting, graphics and book illustration. The artist's works are in museum and private collections, including the Tartu Art Museum, which houses the largest collection of his works, as well as the Art Museum of Estonia, the National Gallery Prague, the famous Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection of nonconformist art (USA) and a number of private collections in Europe and Russia.
