Pair of Antique Japanese Satsuma Vases, Meiji Period, Possibly Kinkozan - A fine matched pair of large Japanese Satsuma vases, richly decorated with gilt and enamel over a soft coral-pink ground. Each vase is of oviform body raised on tripod feet, with wide trumpet necks having pie-crust rims and elaborate applied dragon handles. The central decoration depicts playful puppies amid grapevines, rendered in exquisite gilt and polychrome enamel detail, surrounded by scrolling foliage and patterned diaper grounds at the neck and shoulder. The lavish use of gilt, the finely painted animals, and the unusual coral glaze ground are all hallmarks of high-quality Kyoto Satsuma production during the late 19th century. 19 in. H, 8.5 in.
