Historic Engraving “Presentation de la Mariée” by J. Bailey, from the Hunt-Phalen Mansion - Large 19th-century engraving titled “Presentation de la Mariée”, signed in the plate “J. Bailey – sculp.” The finely executed work depicts a grand domestic scene of George and Martha Washington receiving a bride and wedding party in an opulent interior. The composition, rich in historical and social detail, is characteristic of the patriotic prints that decorated refined American homes during the Victorian era. This very engraving was prominently featured in the Hunt-Phalen Mansion of Memphis, Tennessee, an antebellum home with deep Civil War ties and a long lineage of family-occupied history. The piece is documented in Victorian Homes Magazine (June 2000), where it is pictured hanging in the study of the mansion (article copy included in this lot). The Hunt-Phalen House hosted Confederate General Leonidas Polk, Union leaders, and Civil War planning sessions, making it a centerpiece of Southern history.
