Shell-Carved Block-Front Knee Hole Desk - Richly detailed shell-carved block-front knee whole desk, the slant lid carved with three bold shells, a large central scallop shell flanked by smaller shell medallions. The lid opens to reveal a fitted interior with pigeonholes, document slots, and small drawers flanking a central prospect door also carved with shell motif. The lower case features a blocked facade with four drawers, arranged as two over two, flanked by banks of drawers on either side of a recessed center compartment. The whole rests on heavily carved ogee bracket feet with bold claw-and-ball elements and deep acanthus carving. Brass hardware in classic batwing style completes the desk. 41 in. H, 40 in. W, 10 in. D. The form and detailing of this desk are inspired by the iconic kneehole desks of Townsend-Goddard school of Newport, Rhode Island (1765-75). The authoritative reference Marsh's Expert in American Antiques, (p. 52, illustrated fig. 25) notes that an original Newport example of this form, with similar shell and block-front elements, realized $104,000.00 in a 1971 auction. While present desk is a later interpretation, it captures the same grandeur and presence that made Newport examples legendary among collectors.
