Large African Carved Wooden Mask, Baga or Nalu Peoples, Guinea, Mid-20th Century - Impressively scaled mask carved from a single piece of hardwood, featuring an elongated oval form with bold conical eyes, raised ridge nose, and incised lines about the mouth. The surface shows a deep, smooth patina from age and handling. Such abstract and powerful designs are characteristic of the Baga and Nalu peoples of coastal Guinea, where they were used in agricultural and initiation ceremonies. Mounted on a later metal stand. Approx. 24 in. H (including stand), 10 in. W, 9 in. D Condition: Age cracks, scuffs, and minor losses; stable surface with well-developed natural patina.
