African Carved Wooden Male Figure, Senufo Peoples, Ivory Coast, Mid-20th Century - Carved from a single block of dense hardwood, this standing male figure displays the stylized elongation and angular facial features characteristic of the Senufo carving tradition of northern Côte d’Ivoire. The figure stands upright on an integral cylindrical base, with hands positioned at the abdomen and a high crested coiffure extending back from the forehead. The surface shows traces of original ritual patination and natural oxidation from age. Figures of this type were used in Poro society contexts for ancestral veneration and initiation rites. Old collector’s label inscribed “Senufo Tribe, Ivory Coast, Africa.” Approx. 27 in. H, 7 in. W Condition: Expected surface wear, stable age cracks, and minor losses; deep brown patina consistent with traditional handling and mid-20th-century origin.
