Bidspirit auction | Large Carved “Crocodile Canoe” Sculpture,

Large Carved “Crocodile Canoe” Sculpture, West African, mid-20th century - A striking and elaborate hand-carved African figural sculpture in the form of a crocodile-shaped canoe carrying a procession of seated tribal figures, each individually carved in stylized form. The hull displays geometric incising and brass inlaid details, with the openwork interior holding seven figures, including a prominent steersman and paddlers. Carved from a single piece of dense tropical hardwood with rich reddish-brown patina. This is a dynamic and sculpturally impressive example of mid-century West African carving, likely from the Congo or Cameroon region. The detailed integration of animal and human forms reflects traditional ceremonial symbolism of unity between the spiritual and physical worlds. Approx. 26 in. H, 46 in. L, 7 in. D Condition: Presents beautifully overall; one nostril tip, eye, and tooth element missing as shown, all minor and unobtrusive in display. Light surface wear consistent with age and use.
