African Hide Shield, Possibly Sudan or Ethiopia, Late 19th–Early 20th Century - An elongated oval shield formed from thickened animal hide, likely hippopotamus or rhinoceros, stretched and bound around a central spine and stitched at the periphery with rawhide thongs. The interior features a woven fiber handle and natural curvature consistent with defensive use in battle or ceremonial contexts. The surface retains its deep brown patina from age and use, with visible traces of wear and minor cracking typical of age. Approx. 27 in. H, 17 in. W, 9 in. D. Condition: Age-consistent surface wear, some stiffening and edge abrasions; overall structurally sound with fine patination.
