Lobi Wooden Mortar and Pestle, Burkina Faso, Early–Mid 20th Century - A large, hand-carved wooden mortar and pestle used for pounding grain, attributed to the Lobi or Senufo peoples of Burkina Faso or Côte d’Ivoire. The mortar, carved from a single log, features a thick rim and flared foot with deep interior cavity, showing extensive use and natural age cracks. The original pestle with cylindrical striking head accompanies the piece. Together they represent a classic utilitarian form now appreciated for its sculptural presence and ethnographic authenticity. Mortar approx. 32 in. H, 18 in. dia.; pestle 38 in. L. Condition: Age-consistent wear, shrinkage cracks, and surface patina from long use; stable overall and displays well.
