Songye Carved Stool, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Early–Mid 20th Century - A finely carved Songye stool, the circular seat supported by a kneeling female figure with sharply angular features, flared coiffure, and characteristic Songye scarification. The figure’s elongated face and expressive mouth are rendered in strong geometric planes, while the seat rim is decorated with zigzag incising. The top surface displays incised linear motifs, likely symbolic. Deep brown patina from age and handling. Approx. 20 in. H, 15 in. dia. Condition: Minor surface wear, scattered age cracks, and stable shrinkage splits; rich patina and excellent sculptural form.
