Carved Female Figure with Vessel, Yoruba People, Nigeria, mid-20th century - Graceful hand-carved wooden figure of a standing woman balancing a rounded vessel atop her head, holding an infant in her arms. Such figures, known as Oshun priestess figures or Ere Ibeji variants, symbolize fertility, motherhood, and offerings to the gods. The figure displays traditional Yoruba stylization with high forehead, striated coiffure, and fine scarification patterns. Retains traces of original red glass bead adornments around the neck and a warm, even patina developed through age and ritual use. Approximately 13 in. high, 4 in. wide, and 3 in. deep. Condition: Minor age cracks, surface wear, and slight darkening from handling and libation; overall very good with strong definition.
