Carved Wooden Helmet Mask, Mende People, Sierra Leone/Liberia, mid-20th century - Traditional hand-carved hardwood Sowei mask representing idealized feminine beauty, featuring a downcast gaze, finely incised facial scarifications, and a high plaited coiffure surmounted by a twin-lobed crest. These masks, worn by the Sande women’s society during initiation and ceremonial dances, symbolize spiritual refinement, wisdom, and fertility. The surface shows an attractive aged brown patina with areas of natural wear. Approximately 14 in. high, 9 in. wide, and 10 in. deep. Condition: Age-consistent wear with stable drying cracks; surface smoothing and edge abrasions from traditional handling and display.
