Akan Bronze Gold Weight of Musician with Balafon, Ghana, Late 19th century - Finely detailed lost-wax cast bronze weight depicting a seated musician playing a traditional balafon (xylophone), each bar individually modeled, the figure wearing a conical cap and bent slightly forward in concentration. Excellent patina of age with greenish oxidation typical of old African bronze alloy. The Akan people of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire created such figural weights both as functional currency standards and symbols of cultural identity, with musical themes celebrating rhythm, ceremony, and storytelling. 3 in.
