Decorated Terracotta Water Vessel, Nupe or Yoruba People, Nigeria, mid-20th century - Large hand-coiled terracotta vessel with flared rim and geometric burnished designs encircling the body, featuring two small loop handles and a raised spout modeled as a stylized face. The vessel exhibits the fine incised and burnished decoration characteristic of Nupe or Yoruba ceramic traditions of central Nigeria, where such forms were used for storing and serving water during household and ceremonial use. Warm reddish-brown clay body with contrasting black slip decoration. Approximately 14 in. high, 10 in. diameter. Condition: Minor rim and base wear, small surface flakes and scuffs consistent with age and handling; overall very good with stable structure and strong color contrast.
