Smaller Decorated Terracotta Water Vessel, Nupe or Yoruba People, Nigeria, mid-20th century - Hand-coiled terracotta vessel with twin loop handles and a flared rim, its surface incised and burnished with linear and chevron motifs in black slip against an orange-red clay ground. These smaller vessels were used domestically and ceremonially for storing and cooling water and are typical of the refined pottery traditions of the Nupe and Yoruba peoples of central Nigeria. The symmetrical patterning and balanced form demonstrate both function and artistry. Approximately 10 in. high, 8 in. diameter. Condition: Minor abrasions and scattered surface wear; small firing imperfections consistent with age and traditional production.
