Bidspirit auction | Kwele Mask, Gabon, Early to
Kwele Mask, Gabon, Early to Mid-20th Century - Distinctive carved wood Kwele mask, characterized by its heart-shaped face, concave form, and sharply incised ridges that accentuate the geometric structure. The minimalist composition, with slit eyes and subtle pigmentation in white and dark brown, evokes the refined abstraction of the Kwele people’s beete cult masks. These were traditionally used in ceremonies promoting harmony and social renewal. Fine age patina with traces of natural pigment. 10 in. H, 5.5 in. W, 4 in. D Condition: Good, with minor surface wear and age cracks consistent with ceremonial use and age; small edge losses and early wire repair visible at perimeter.
