English Carved Oak Joint Stool Armchair, 17th Century - A remarkably early English carved oak joint stool armchair, 17th century, displaying deep relief foliate carving typical of West Country or Gloucestershire work of the period. The rectangular back features twin paneled reserves carved with stylized tulip and scrolling foliage motifs, framed by chip-carved rails and stiles. The shaped seat is formed from thick oak boards with wonderful age wear, supported by turned front legs and plain rear posts joined by molded stretchers. Carved serpent and geometric accents continue along the seat rail and arms, all showing rich patination from centuries of use. Condition: Surface wear, shrinkage cracks, and losses consistent with age; separation to seat boards; scattered old repairs and expected distress. Stable and displays beautifully with an outstanding period patina.
