Pair of Carved Eagle-Back Side Chairs, Attributed to George J. Henkel & Co., New York, c. 1880 - Superb pair of carved mahogany parlor side chairs attributed to George J. Henkel & Co., New York, each surmounted by an exquisitely detailed American eagle crest with fully spread wings, carved in deep relief amid acanthus and floral scrollwork. The serpentine frames feature tufted crimson velvet upholstery bordered by finely carved floral aprons and cabriole legs ending in scrolled toes. A powerful yet graceful example of late 19th-century American figural furniture at its most sculptural, these chairs exemplify Henkel’s mastery in bold naturalistic carving and patriotic symbolism. Believed to have been part of the Bocage Plantation parlor suite, Darrow, LA. 47 in. H, 25 in. W, 26 in. D. Condition: Excellent overall presentation with light handling wear to velvet; crisp and intact carving with minor age separations to rear crests; structurally tight and stable.
