Monumental Carved Eagle-Back Sofa, Attributed to George J. Henkel & Co., New York, c. 1880 - Magnificent carved mahogany sofa attributed to George J. Henkel & Co., New York, surmounted by a monumental hand-carved American eagle crest with outstretched wings above bold rococo scrollwork and foliate carving. The deeply modeled crest, with its layered feathers and animated form, displays the extraordinary sculptural virtuosity for which Henkel’s New York workshop was celebrated. The serpentine frame with tufted back and seat upholstered in fine red and gold toile fabric, the seat rail and cabriole legs richly carved with floral scrolls and paw feet. A commanding centerpiece from one of America’s most imaginative 19th-century furniture workshops. Believed to have been part of the Bocage Plantation parlor suite, Darrow, LA. 55½ in. H, 81 in. W, 33 in. D. Condition: Excellent presentation; upholstery tight and clean with minimal wear; minor expected age separations and surface touch-ups to carving; structurally sound and highly impressive in person.
