Monumental Signed C. Lee Carved Mahogany Half Tester Bed, Southern, circa 1845–1860 - A rare and architecturally commanding Southern half tester bed, executed in richly figured mahogany and signed multiple times by the maker C. Lee, who is documented for producing some of the most ambitious high-style bedsteads in the Deep South during the mid-19th century. This example survives with nearly every major structural element marked, an exceptional indicator of original workshop practice, authenticity, and completeness. The bed presents the full visual drama associated with the Southern half-tester tradition, sometimes referred to in regional inventories as a “¾ tester”, defined by its massively projecting canopy suspended over the head of the bed only, supported by the soaring rear posts. The tester is shaped in a bold serpentine outline with deep molded edges and an applied carved crest featuring scrolling acanthus, shellwork, and classical ornamentation. The underside of the canopy retains later but appropriate pleated upholstery, radiating from a central boss in a sunburst configuration, echoing documented period treatments. The gently arched headboard rises to a deeply carved anthemion crest flanked by volutes, a characteristic flourish found on the finest New Orleans and lower Mississippi River Valley carving of the period. The panel below features double-mitered ogee framing and exhibits excellent mahogany color and clarity. The rear posts, ascending to over 10½ feet in height, are turned and reeded with swelling entasis, terminating in robust urn-and-flame finials. Every major component is stamped or impressed “C. LEE” or variations thereof, including rails, posts, and interior structural elements. This degree of marking is exceptionally uncommon. The serpentine footboard, elevated between the monumental front posts, is embellished with a central carved roundel framed by foliate scrollwork. Its proportions and cresting motif complement the headboard in both profile and carving vocabulary, unifying the bed’s design. Side rails appear original and retain their period bolt-and-washer joinery. Constructed in solid mahogany with secondary woods appropriate to mid-19th century Southern cabinet shops, the bed exhibits hand-planed surfaces, pegged and bolted joinery, and tool marks consistent with pre-industrial manufacture. The size and quality of mahogany used here, especially in the towering rear posts, indicate access to premium imported lumber and a clientele of significant means. Dimensions: 126 in. H, 64.5 in. W (interior), 77 in. D (interior). Queen size mattress. Condition: Excellent structural integrity; canopy fabric later; minor expected wear to surfaces and joinery consistent with age. Maker’s stamps remain visible across numerous elements, including rails, posts, and interior framework.
