Monumental Victorian Carved ROSEWOOD Breakfront Bookcase, Circa 1870 - Description Updated: A truly monumental Victorian carved ROSEWOOD breakfront bookcase of exceptional scale and presence, circa 1870, likely American or English workshop, crafted in richly grained walnut with deeply sculpted ebonized appliqués. The architectural composition features four tall glazed doors framed with applied foliate swags, flanking pilasters, and molded paneled surrounds, all surmounted by an impressive crest centering an ebonized cartouche with scrolling acanthus and cabochon accents. The projecting lower section presents four paneled cabinet doors, each adorned with large, masterfully carved ebonized trophy plaques, depicting motifs of armor, instruments, flags, and classical implements, set within molded walnut frames and fluted stiles. The vast interior offers an imposing display area suitable for books, porcelain, or collections, retaining its original patinated surfaces. Rear panels are fully finished in period tongue-and-groove planking. An extraordinary example of high-Victorian craftsmanship at a palatial scale, one of the largest period breakfronts we have encountered, perfect for a grand library, gallery wall, or statement interior. 128 in.
