Bidspirit auction | American Classical Mahogany Swell-Front Dresser
American Classical Mahogany Swell-Front Dresser with Upper Gallery, Mid-19th Century - A handsome classical-period mahogany dresser featuring a bold two-tiered upper gallery over a swell-front case, executed in richly figured mahogany veneers with excellent color and presence. The stepped gallery houses a bank of small drawers fitted with turned brass rosette pulls and original keyholes, rising above a conforming serpentine-front case of two short drawers over three full-width graduated drawers. Flanking the case are robust carved and spiraled front columns terminating in acanthus-carved capitals, all raised on turned legs typical of the 1840–1860 period. The drawer interiors are clean and early; the backboards show original hand-planed construction. Approx. 59 in. H to top of gallery, 49–50 in. W, 24–25 in. D. Condition: Good overall for age; veneer surfaces show expected age wear, small losses, and scattered finish imperfections. Some drawers exhibit minor veneer cracks and repairs. Case remains sturdy; backboards original but with typical oxidation and wear. Brass pulls appear period. A decorative and structurally sound piece that presents well.
