Southern Pine Pie Safe with Tins, Early–Mid 19th Century, From the Birthplace Estate of Major John - A tall and handsome Southern pie safe in old surface, crafted of yellow pine with shaped, punched-tin panels to the doors and sides, each featuring elongated oval openings fitted with original screened tins for air circulation. The case is raised on tapered legs with early casters, and the interior retains three shelves (one later). Warm patinated surface with mellow oxidation throughout. Pie safes with this tall, narrow stance and elongated tin patterns are typical of Alabama and east-central Tennessee forms from the 1830–1850 period. From the birthplace estate of Major John Pelham, C.S.A. (1838–1863), the celebrated “Gallant Pelham, ” noted artillery officer under J.E.B. Stuart and one of the Confederacy’s most admired young heroes. The piece descended directly through the Pelham/McGehee line for six generations until the passing of Miss Louise Foster in 2020.58 in. H, 42 in. W, 16.5 in. D. Condition: Estate condition with expected wear, scratches, scattered staining, and age shrinkage; some tins with oxidation; shelves with use wear; casters early but appear added slightly later; structurally solid and presents well.
