American Gilt Brass Dress Sword with Leather Scabbard, Late 19th Century - An American dress sword featuring a gilt brass hilt with cast and chased decoration, including a knuckle guard terminating in a scroll-form quillon and a ribbed grip wrapped in braided wire. The straight, single-edged steel blade is etched with decorative motifs and retains a partially legible inscription, including the engraved name William J. Clement. The sword is accompanied by its original black leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts, suspension rings, and decorative drag, fitted with a braided tassel with classical dolphine motif at its tip. This type of sword is consistent with late 19th-century American fraternal, militia, or ceremonial use, rather than active military service. 34 in. L (overall), approx. 5 in. W Condition: Good overall condition for age. The blade shows scattered light surface wear and minor spotting, with etched decoration still visible.
