French Boulle Style Desk Set with Inkwells and Gilt Bronze Mounts - French Boulle style desk set, rectangular in form, richly decorated with red tortoiseshell-style ground and intricate brass inlay in scrolling foliate patterns characteristic of the Boulle tradition. The slanted writing surface is bordered by gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, including acanthus-cast corner mounts, mask cartouche to the front, and finely detailed edging throughout. The piece reflects the enduring influence of André-Charles Boulle (1642–1732), whose marquetry technique—combining brass and tortoiseshell—became synonymous with French luxury furnishings of the Louis XIV period. This example is a later 19th to early 20th century revival piece, produced during the height of the Napoleon III and Belle Époque fascination with 17th–18th century French decorative arts.3 in.
